Emily Brontë was the fifth-born of six sons, above them she had two sisters, Charlotte (1816-55) and Anne (1820-49), and a brother, Branwell (1817-48). She was born in \8\8 and she spent most of her life at Haworth, in Yorkshire, with her family. She was self-educated, reading father’s books or periodicals and she had a passion for writing, as her sisters. Her family had an important place in her life: Charlotte and Anne were writers as her and they published together, at the beginning, a volume of poetry in 1846, using a pseudonym, “Poems of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell”; Branwell too had a remarkable position in her life because, according to a lot of critics, she was inspired by him and his dissolute life for the Heathcliff’s dark and taciturn nature (the protagonist of her novel).
Meanwhile, Emily and her sisters decided to write a novel each one: Charlotte, as Currer Bell, published “Jane Eyre”, who had a great success immediately; Emily, as Ellis Bell, “Wuthering Heights”; Anne, as Acton Bell, “Agnes Grey”.
The only one Emily’s novel was “Wuthering Heights”, it was immediately refused by contemporary critics because of its immorality, in a history of love, death, revenge, hate and solitude.
Soon, Emily died in 1848 of consumption.
Emily Bronte fu la quinta di sei figli, tra essi ricordiamo le due sorelle Charlotte e Anne ed il fratello Bramwell. Nacque nel 1818 e trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita ad Haworth, in Yorkshire, con la sua famiglia. Era un'autodidatta, imparò leggendo i libri del padre ed i periodici dell'epoca e nacque in lei una passione per la scrittura, come per le sue sorelle.
La sua famiglia ebbe un posto fondamentale nella sua vita: Charlotte e Anne furono scrittrice come lei ed all'inizio pubblicarono insieme nel 1846 un volume di poesie, usando degli pseudonimi, "Poesie di Currer, Ellis e Acton Bell"; anche Bramwell ebbe una notevole posizione nella sua vita perché, secondo molti critici, fu ispirata da lui e la sua vita dissoluta per la natura oscura e taciturna di Heathcliff (il protagonista del suo romanzo).
Nel frattempo, Emily e le sue sorelle decisero di scrivere un romanzo ciascuno: Charlotte, con lo pseudonimo di Currer Bell, pubblicò "Jane Eyre", riscuotendo subito un gran successo; Emily, come Ellis Bell, "Wuthering Heights" (=Cime Tempestose); Anne, chiamandosi Acton Bell, "Agnes Grey".
L'unico romanzo di Emily comunque fu proprio "Wuthering Heights", ma fu immediatamente rifiutato dalla critica del tempo a causa della sua immoralità, in una storia di amore, morte, vendetta, odio e solitudine.
Presto, Emily morì nel 1848 di tubercolosi.
